MATHIAS: A once vivacious man lucky in love rather young, Mathias married his sweetheart Dyna, had two children, and then threw himself into a dream he'd had since being a boy: that of becoming a powerful wizard, strong enough to become famed within Baldur's Gate. Unfortunately this would be a struggle for him and he was never able to advance beyond average, a throughly upsetting and frustrating experience for him. When his third child was born twelve years after his second, and the child, Thomas, turned out to be a sorcerer who demonstrated magical power before he could fully walk, Mathias would call the boy a 'personal insult from the gods' and treat him terribly. The bitterness Mathias feels towards the failing of his life's dream and towards his son has never really faded away, and his only daughter, Anne, believes that he'll carry those feelings with him right into the grave.

DYNA: A quiet woman once swept off her feet by Mathias, Dyna's love for her husband would eclipse all else in her life... including her own children. While that didn't mean she did not love them, she loved her husband more, and this was, ultimately, why she was not willing to truly confront Mathias over his mistreatment of her third child, Tom. Instead Dyna constantly asked the child as he grew to 'understand what his father was going through' and taught him to conceal his powers as best she could. When he vanished to the streets she did not do anything close to as much as she could have to find him, which resulted in a fistfight with her daughter, Anne, who blamed Dyna fully for enabling Mathias's bitterness. Years later she is aware her son is alive and laments their lack of contact but hasn't done much to attempt to fix the relationship, instead focusing her energy on helping her eldest son and his wife raise her grandchildren.

JONATHAN: Mathias and Dyna's oldest child, a fisherman by trade, almost 14 years older than Thomas. His feelings towards his parents and siblings and everything that has happened between them seems largely apathetic, and most who know Jon have said he seems almost perpetually bored (or perhaps something more like distant). Married with a son and daughter of his own, he lives right next to his parents, so at least has to have some level of investment in his family (or his wife does).

JEREMIAH: The final child of their sibling group of four and the one upon Mathias most doted. With Thomas picking up rather quickly on the favortism directed towards his little brother, an antagonistic relationship between the two was perhaps inevitable as young children, but as adults the relationship pretty much does not exist at all. Jeremiah grew up with a warm adoration for his father and only scattered memories of Tom, never properly meeting Tom as an adult and not really understanding what had happened there. He works as a carpenter and is currently courting a woman named Rosie.
